Car Theft – How to Protect Your keyless Car from Theft with an OBD Lock
Car theft is on the rise in Victoria, 90% increase in the past 5 years with the Metro area hit the hardest, while thefts in country QLD have increased over 100%.
Criminals are increasingly targeting cars with a keyless push-button ignition to start the car, using technology to access the on-board diagnostics (OBD) port, disabling security systems and driving off without the key.
Why the OBD Port is a Risk
Modern vehicles have an OBD port (usually under the dashboard), which mechanics use to access diagnostic data. Thieves are now accessing the port, then overriding immobilisers, reprograming key fobs and stealing the car—quietly and quickly.
These devices are now being used like a modern-day screwdriver to steal cars.
How to prevent OBD access – install an OBD Lock
An OBD lock physically blocks access to the port, preventing thieves from connecting electronic devices. They’re affordable, easy to install, and available at most auto stores. Some advanced models also come with alarms or tracking features.
How to Install:
- Turn off the vehicle
- Locate the OBD port (under the dash)
- Follow your lock’s instructions to fit it securely
Or talk to your mechanic to get some help.
Don’t Forget the Basics
Preventing access to your car is the first step. Always:
- Lock your doors and windows
- Remove valuables and keys from the vehicle
- Park in secure, well-lit areas
- Consider extra security like steering locks, alarms or CCTV
