Don’t Admit Liability After an Accident – Leave it to Your Insurer!

It’s a common and very human reaction to feel a sense of responsibility after an accident occurs, especially if someone is injured.

This can sometimes lead to the impulse to admit fault.

However well-intentioned, your insurance policy clearly states you cannot admit fault.

Leave it up to the insurer’s claims team to contact the person who’s been injured or had their property damaged. They will be able to find out who was at fault, based on all the information available.

It’s ok to apologise, just not say you’re at fault and your insurer will pay.

The main problem with admitting you’re at fault is that it may turn out the other person was partly at fault or totally at fault, and your insurer will only pay when you’re at fault.

So, if you promise to pay for repairs or medical bills, you may have to pay them out of your own pocket.

Do’s & Don’ts

It’s ok to apologise if you want to, just don’t admit you caused the damage.

Leave it up to the insurer’s claims team to contact the person who’s been injured or had their property damaged and work out who’s responsible.
