Keyless Car Theft: Could an OBD Lock Help Protect Your Vehicle?
Modern vehicle security has made traditional car theft more difficult, but criminals have adapted.
Victoria Police is warning motorists about the growing use of electronic devices to steal vehicles with push-button start technology.
One method involves the vehicle’s on-board diagnostics, or OBD, port.
What is an OBD port?
Most modern vehicles have an OBD port, usually located under the dashboard.
It is designed to allow mechanics and technicians to connect diagnostic equipment to the vehicle’s computer.
However, thieves can also use electronic key-programming devices through the OBD port to communicate with the vehicle, reprogram a key or bypass certain security systems.
Victoria Police says some vehicle makes and models with electronic push-start technology are particularly targeted.
What is an OBD lock?
An OBD lock is a physical cover fitted over the diagnostic port.
It is designed to prevent an unauthorised device being connected to the vehicle and can add another barrier for a thief attempting to program a new key.
Victoria Police and RACV both recommend OBD locks as one way to help deter electronic vehicle theft.
They aren’t foolproof, so they’re best used as part of a broader approach to vehicle security.
Don’t forget the basics
Other practical steps include:
-
lock the vehicle and close all windows
-
park in a locked garage or secure, well-lit area where possible
-
keep keys away from doors and windows
-
use a signal-blocking pouch for keyless entry fobs
-
consider a visible steering wheel lock
-
remove valuables and keys from the vehicle
-
consider lighting, CCTV or other security around where vehicles are parked.
If you use an OBD lock, check that it is compatible with your make and model and whether it affects servicing or warranty arrangements.
What if your vehicle is stolen?
Report the theft to police as soon as possible and notify your insurer or Insurance Advisernet adviser.
If vehicles are important to your business, it’s also worth checking your Motor policy for theft cover, applicable excesses and whether replacement vehicle or hire-car benefits are included.
Speak with your Insurance Advisernet adviser if you want to review the theft cover and security arrangements for your personal or business vehicles.
